Washington, D.C. – Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) released the following statement on President Trump pardoning January 6 insurrectionists:
“The families of the police officers who lost their lives, those who were injured, and those who were trapped in the Capitol are on my heart in this moment. On day one, President Trump has clearly shown that his focus is political retribution and vindication, not improving the lives of the American people. Pardoning and commuting the sentences of criminals involved in the January 6th insurrection that he incited, including those charged with assaulting law enforcement, had one purpose – to rewrite the history of what took place in the Capitol that day. I was one of the members trapped up in the House Gallery on January 6th. Let’s be clear: a violent assault on law enforcement and defacing of the Capitol took place on that day. And allowing those that were involved to escape justice is an insult to our democracy and to the police who lost their lives. President Trump can issue as many pardons as he likes – but they will not change the truth.”
