Washington, DC – Last night, Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) released the following statement:
“I voted in favor of reversing President Trump’s unnecessary national emergency on Canadian imports. The President is doing everything he possibly can to justify extreme tariffs on our biggest trading partners and raise prices for American families. Let’s be clear: tariffs are taxes on American families. They do nothing but make things more expensive. These arbitrary trade wars come at a price – and Delaware’s farmers, consumers, and families are the ones who will foot the bill.
“These 19th century trade policies do not prepare us for a 21st century economy. We not only share a border with Canada but have also historically shared a strategic economic partnership. Everything from essential groceries and food products, to building supplies and fertilizers, and materials that implicate U.S. national security crosses our northern border each and every day.
“While there is no doubt that the fentanyl crisis is a public health emergency that has taken far too many lives, harmful tariffs that place undue economic burden on working people is not the solution. As someone who knows what it’s like to see a loved one struggle with addiction, I want nothing more than commonsense policies that help save lives and address the root causes of addiction. That’s why I’ve been a leader in coming up with bipartisan solutions to get fentanyl and other drugs out of our communities. However, this misguided trade policy misses the mark completely and only adds more pain on our families.”
